The Course

As expectations regarding the social responsibilities of art museums change, training arts professionals how to be anti-discriminatory in their professional practices becomes ever more crucial. This course is an introductory seminar to anti-racist museum practice, designed as a gateway into our broader five-course certificate that will launch Spring 2025.

Think of this as your toolkit for change! You'll emerge from this course equipped with the knowledge to advocate for anti-racist practices within art institutions. Whether you're a museum professional, an artist, a student, or just someone deeply invested in the arts, this exploration is not just about theory; it’s about taking actionable steps. Get ready to apply what you learn to real-world scenarios, creating environments that welcome and foster dialogue, and ensuring that art institutions today are part of the solution in addressing racial inequity.

What You Will Learn

When I started designing this course, my main goal was to create a space where we could genuinely delve into the intersections of art, colonialism, history, capitalism, racism, and social justice.

I meticulously stitched together lessons that are not only insightful but also practical, giving you the tools to both recognize and challenge systemic racial biases within museum practices. I am thrilled about how it's turned out—thoughtfully structured units guide you from the basic concepts to more complex case studies, ensuring a thorough understanding no matter your starting point.

By the end of it, you'll have a richer, more nuanced perspective on how to advocate for and implement equitable practices within the art world. Plus, the course is peppered with interactive elements, making learning both engaging and memorable. I'm confident you'll find it an empowering resource that will help you to enact positive change.
